Woodson believed that knowledge about black
history was essential to battling perceptions about race
and was necessary to carry on tradition. "If a race has
not worth-while tradition," wrote Woodson in "Negro
History Week" in The Journal of Negro History (Volume
11, No. 2, April 1926), "it becomes a negligible factor
. . . and it stands in danger of being exterminated. The
American Indian leaves no continuous record. He did not
appreciate the value of tradition; and where is he
today?" Thus, for Woodson the documentation of black
history was an absolute necessity if blacks wanted
inclusion in the record of mankind's
progress. Dr.

of Black History Week, Currently known as Black
History Month |

Dear Urban League Family,
This is likely one of the most difficult economic
times with which our generation of young professionals
has had to face. Each day we are inundated with
more news and evidence that our country's economy is
failing. To make matters worse, we do not see an
end to this cycle.
As the Urban League Young Professionals, we need
our combined energy to combat these challenges. We
need each and every individual who seeks to improve
themselves, their business or their community engaged
and involved in rebuilding our economy.
We are THE organization which was created for
YOU and now is our greatest challenge. We can
choose to stand on the side lines and try to wait it
out, or we can take steps to make sure that tomorrow is
brighter. The Urban League Young Professionals
gives you the opportunity to affect change through
professional development, economic empowerment,
community outreach, health and political activism.
We are the key to a brighter future, but we need to
get to work now. During our Tuesday February 10th
general body meeting, you will be given an opportunity
to see how this organization can move
mountains.
Will you join us?
Regards,
Anthony Murphy

YP members try ice skating for
fun and fitness
Many young adults have a philosophy
about exercise: If it's not fun, they won't do it.
That's why the Health and Quality of Life Committee
initiated healthy, yet exciting activities as a prime
initiative for 2009's YP Members. "Somehow,
when young professionals start their careers, get a
family and settle down, they lose the fun instinct,"
said Sherpri Giles Small, Chair of the Health and
Quality of Life Committee.

Top 25 Careers to Pursue in
a Recession
If you want to recession-proof your career, the key
is to focus on work that continues even when most people
don't have disposable income to spend. So while
consumers may not hit the mall as often, you can
guarantee that people will continue to get sick, pay
taxes and use energy. These are just a few of the
careers and industries that can be expected to thrive in
a down economy.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE: CITI Group and EDGE
helping Dallas students realize their
potential
While others were attending parades
honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. or even enjoying the
day off from work, EDGE/100 Fellows were involved in a
day on not a day off... At this workshop, students
learned about interviewing techniques and how to manage
their
money.
